Replacing the CygNet Historian for Better Data Access

Organizations using the CygNet SCADA platform struggle with data access and reporting. The included CygNet VHS (Value History Service) historian is not optimized for performance or data retrieval; accessing data from the archive is difficult and cumbersome. A lack of modern reporting and trending tools results in poor data visualization. Overall, the historian solution is not capable as an enterprise solution and should not be used as such.

A Dedicated CygNet Data Collector

Canary has successfully provided major oil and gas companies, including Murphy Oil, EP Energy, and Birchcliff Energy, an easier way to store, contextualize, and report on data from CygNet. Using CygNet’s .NET API, the Canary data collector logs user defined CygNet Facility and UDC combinations as tags within the Canary Historian. In doing so, Canary captures not only Points’ timestamps, values, and qualities, but also CygNet Facility and Point attributes.

The collector uses the CygNet VHS as its data source, not the UIS (Universal Interface Service). This allows for following benefits:

  • Canary automatically discovers new CygNet facilities and their UDCs (tags) and log them to the Canary Historian.
  • This process is automated, preventing admins from needing to manually add new tags in Canary.
  • Should any facility data be historized prior to Canary discovering the tags or if the CygNet server is unavailable, history is backfilled from the CygNet VHS to the Canary archive.

The CygNet Data Collector relies on the Canary Sender Service to move data securely and efficiently to the Canary Historian, using the same technology as all other Canary data collection methods. This architecture provides store and forward technology between the CygNet server and the Canary Historian, achieving buffering capabilities between the applications should network outages or server unavailability occur.

CygNet Architecture

Once data is securely logged to the Canary System, it can be contextualized. Canary Virtual Views and asset models can be built, mirroring the structure of the SCADA system, or providing new data models for reporting requests. Canary visualization tools like Axiom provide organizations with cutting-edge trending, dashboarding, and automated reports, all from a web browser.

With the simple additional of the Canary Data Collector for CygNet, an organization’s data access is transformed, team members are empowered, and confident, data-driven decision making becomes the new standard.
